S.H.I.T. Happens: Building Resilient Children in a Fragile World re-frames resilience as a learned behavioral skill. Behavior scientists Dr. Paul Gavoni and Steve Ward explain why today’s children struggle—not because they’re fragile, but because modern environments reinforce avoidance more than persistence. The authors offer a science based alternative to over protection and “toughening up,” showing how everyday moments—homework battles, sports setbacks, emotional meltdowns, and social conflict—can be transformed into opportunities for kids to practice recovery, problem solving, and effort. By drawing on the structure of the Hero’s Journey, the book re-frames adults not as rescuers or enforcers, but as guides who create safe, appropriately scaled challenges that help children grow confidence and behavioral strength.
