Certification Central is a proud supporter of the North Dakota Small Organized Schools. We are offering a free course for educators who are utilizing the permit for community experts, or for any educator who wants a pedagogy refresher. This professional development can also be taken for a 1 credit equivalent toward license renewal (transcript fee $35). For those who wish to receive this credit, indicate so on the checkout page. Overview
The purpose of Pedagogy/Teaching 101 is to provide an introductory examination of key practices new teachers must know to be effective the first day in their unique learning environments. In addition, this course is to bring about a greater awareness of evidence-based practices of effective teaching and learning, as well as to get the participants thinking about applying each of these practices within their own settings. Each module of this online course contains interactive lectures, brief videos, and supplemental handouts. There is no text required for this course; however, at the end of each module, multiple sources and resources are provided that new teachers can (and should) seek out on the topics discussed.
This course contains six interconnected modules:
- Effective Teaching and Learning
- Developing Positive Relationships Between Teacher and Student
- Lesson Design
- Summative, Formative, and Authentic Assessments
- Personalized Learning for the 21st Century Learner
- Models of Teaching
Effective Teaching and Learning provides a general overview for the course, defining characteristics of effective teaching with a focus on dispositions of effective teachers.
Developing Positive Relationships Between Teacher and Student presents 15 research-based characteristics of effective relationships between teachers and students.
Lesson Design provides a brief yet thorough introduction to backwards design (specifically Understanding by Design), with supplemental templates to assist new teachers with this process.
Summative, Formative, and Authentic Assessments provides an overview of current assessment strategies that will assist both teachers and students understand where they are in the learning process, provide ways in which teachers can interact with assessment data to better restructure their learning environments to address students’ learning needs, and provide strategies for creating assessments that allow students to “show what they know.”
Personalized Learning for the 21st Century Learner introduces differentiated instruction, and applies this educational strategy to the unique learning needs of the 21st century learner.
Models of Teaching discusses the role of teacher as educational designer, and provides an in-depth look at two commonly used instructional strategies: direct instruction and cooperative learning.
Each of these modules provides opportunities for further expansion and exploration based on the growing needs of your teachers. This additional content could be presented online or in-person via professional development opportunities.
